FAITH, LIKE A CHILD

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

A 5 year old was playing around the pond in his back yard, with his sister. He was pulling a float across the water with a rock on top of it. The rock fell off the float and into the muddy water. “It’s a shame your rock fell in,” she said. To this, he said, “Don’t worry, God can get the rock out.” He found a stick lying beside the pond, picked it up, and threw it in. Nothing happened. However, by doing so he was remembering a story about Elisha—a story that he had learned from 2 Kings 6:1-7 in kindergarten Bible class. Elisha and his fellow prophets were building a place where they could meet by the Jordan River. As one of the workers was chopping down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh my lord,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!” The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said.

With the same faith that Elisha had, the 5 year old threw in his stick, asking God to let the rock float. But his rock didn’t float. Later, his sister confessed: “He had so much faith, that I thought the rock was going to float up.” The Bible says faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). That young boy may not be able to tell you what faith is, but he sure can show you!
