GOD'S LOVE FOR US, OUR LOVE FOR OTHERS
“And now abide faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)
John tells us in John 3:16, that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so everyone who believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life. From this verse we can see that the goal of God’s love is to have us spend eternity with Him in Heaven. This is perhaps the greatest Scripture in the Bible, because it tells us of the ‘Good News.’ The proof of God’s Agape (Greek word for love) love is that Christ died for us. God’s love for us is so great that we will never understand it, but we should accept it. Paul tells us in Romans that whatever we do or wherever we are, that nothing will ever separate us from the love of God. These words are so comforting because no matter what trials or hardships come our way we are secure in God’s love. God’s love is constant, indestructible, undeserved—a gift!
Jesus tells us in Mark 12:29-31 that the most important commandment is that we must love the Lord, our God with all our heart, soul, mind and all our strength. The second is equally important—Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.
We hear all through Scripture how important love is. Love means doing what God has commanded and He has commanded us to love one another. If we truly love God, we will love each other, but should show it by our deeds and actions. Real love demands commitment. We must give of our time, money, and personal involvement to help others become better people. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, that true love is patient and slow to anger, kind and gentle to all, unselfish and giving, truthful and honest, hopeful and encouraging, and enduring without end. To love like Christ, we must be unselfish, loyal, and have a genuine concern for others. We must give the kind of love that has no ‘strings attached.’
In summary, we should know that God is love and without Him, love does not exist.
