LIFE AFTER DEATH

“...I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

Nothing challenges the human mind more than questions about life after death. As a child of God, you gain assurances from passages like Psalm 17:15. David expected life after death, but what happens in death?

At death, the soul of a Christian awakes in His likeness. It began with regeneration, advanced through sanctification and finished in glory. All remnants of sin have been canceled. In contrast the body is dead, because of sin, and awaits the resurrection.

Man in his original state was composed of body and spirit, and so it will be in the eternal state. The Savior will reclaim His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). Isaiah wrote, “...awake thou ye that dwell in dust...” Daniel reminds us that those that “sleep in the dust of the earth shall arise...” (Daniel 12:2). In the resurrection that “creation” will be reunited with a “formation,” a body made by God—different than your original body? Yes! But what it will actually be, only God knows. However, you can trust Him that it will be wonderfully and marvelously made—able to last an eternity glorifying your Heavenly Father!

Here is the great contrast: In this earthly image, you are born with infirmities, diseases, and problems. But in the resurrection, you will bear the likeness of the heavenly, described by the apostle as changing your vile body into the likeness of His heavenly body (1 Peter 1:3, 4). This is when you awake in His likeness.
