BRIEF THOUGHTS ON THE HOLY SPIRIT
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of Me” (John 15:26).
In the spiritual realm it is important that our attention be kept focused in the right direction – toward the object of our faith, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit, through the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews, helps us understand what such focus is all about: “Let us run with endurance the Race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith” (12:1-2). John 15:26 is one of two references in the Gospel of John in which the Holy Spirit bears witness to Christ (see also john 16:14-15). This bearing of witness was not an end in itself. Behind it was the purpose “that all might believe through him.” It has always been the Spirit’s desire that people recognize Christ’s authority and submit to His will (Phil 2:9-13). Thus Paul further reminds us that “No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor. 12:3).
This series of short studies on the Holy Spirit will hopefully lead to a deeper, more in-depth study of the Holy Spirit (see Contents for God the Spirit).
